What happens when a line breaks away from its original function and takes on a life of its own? In this session, we take existing line structures, street plans, maps, patterns and text fragments as our starting point, and reimagine them as building blocks for new compositions.
We translate these lines onto strips of paper and explore ways to manipulate, rearrange and transform them. Through folding, perforating, weaving and overlapping, layered structures emerge in which rhythm, repetition and interrelationships become visible. What begins as a trace on paper develops into a tangible surface reminiscent of fabric.
In the second part, we move away from paper and continue this exploration using thread and fabric. Lines become matter: wool, yarn and strips of fabric take the place of paper and acquire volume in space. By connecting, stretching and building up, structures emerge that balance between the fragile and the powerful.
The result is spatial compositions in which line and textile merge into sculptural forms – works that can not only be interpreted, but also experienced.
WISPER Gent is situated at the Dok Noord site. Make sure to read the information on our Dok Noord page beforehand because this place can be a bit of a maze when you first come here.
