What does a landscape look like when you don’t look at it, but feel it? In this session, we approach the landscape not as a recognisable image, but as a collection of textures, rhythms and structures.
We’ll start with the frottage technique, using friction to reveal the textures of everyday materials on paper. Wood, cardboard, fabric, stone or sandpaper each leave their own unique marks. These impressions form the starting point for a series of imaginary landscapes, built up from fragments, layers and chance encounters.
By playing with ink, paint and scratching techniques, we create images that balance control and experimentation. We explore how variations in pressure, movement and the use of materials influence what we see, and how repetition and rhythm can suggest a landscape without literally depicting it.
In the afternoon, we transfer this exploration to textiles. What happens when paper gives way to fabric? How can we use different materials and joining techniques to build up relief, depth and layering? Step by step, a tactile landscape emerges that can not only be viewed, but also experienced.
A day in which seeing gives way to feeling, and in which texture becomes the landscape.
WISPER Gent is situated at the Dok Noord site. Make sure to read the information on our Dok Noord page beforehand because this place can be a bit of a maze when you first come here.
