Every culture carries its songs. The lullabies that sent us to sleep, the melodies that marked celebrations, the tunes we hum without knowing why.
'The Songs We Carry' is a participatory session inviting people from different cultural backgrounds to share and learn songs, lullabies, or traditional dances presented by song sharers. Through guided warm-up activities and a step-by-step group
learning, everyone in the room sings and moves together.
No musical experience required. No pressure to perform. Just a memory, and the willingness to share or receive it. By the end of the session, you’ll carry home a few songs from different outskirts of the world - and know a little more about the people behind them.
Note: we are looking for 3 participants who would like to share a song, lullaby, melody, or traditional dance from their cultural background. No teaching experience needed!
You will teach it to the group step by step with the support of Gabriel, an experienced musician and educator at home in community singing and playing, who is facilitating these sessions.
Would you like to share a song? More than welcome! After your registration, send an e-mail to reindert@wisper.be with your name and the song title of the piece you would like to bring to the group.
"The Songs We Carry" is inspired by the initiative Share a Folk Song, hosted by Anouk Vinders at Open Amare in the Hague.
Check www.opek.be for more information about how to get here. At the first session, you will be welcomed by someone from WISPER who will tell you exactly where in/around the building your course takes place.
Good to know if you take a full-day course here: for the lunch break, you can bring your own lunch, eat in at Café Entrepot or buy something at the Lidl supermarket around the corner.
