In this workshop, we bring together two dance forms: contemporary dance and kathak. We work with core elements of both and allow our dance to be nourished and deepened by the dialogue between them.
Kathak is a classical Indian temple dance known for its rhythmic footwork, refined wrist movements, and storytelling through the body. Both mornings will include technical moments in which we practice certain principles (including basic kathak technique), as well as creative work in which we integrate these principles into our dance language. We will work with both learned movement phrases and improvisation.
In doing so, we will discover how a classical dance form can inspire our own - rather ‘contemporary’ - movement qualities.
