Waacking—originally known as ‘’punking’' or “whacking”—emerged in the 1970s in Los Angeles’s queer disco scene. In a world where LGBTQIA+ people were marginalized, whacking became a powerful tool for visibility, pride, and self-expression. The style is characterized by explosive arm movements, expressive poses, and a strong sense of rhythm and drama.
Carla will offer an introductory course to the club dance style Whacking/Punking. You will explore the fundamental elements of the style: posing, storytelling and character development (Punking), musicality (“if you don’t understand the music, you can’t understand the dance”), armwork and footwork techniques.
The course is designed to support the development of your Whacking freestyle. Choreography may also be introduced when useful for strengthening your freestyle practice.
Check out this video to see Carla in action and to get an idea of what waacking is all about!
Check www.opek.be for more information about how to get here. At the first session, you will be welcomed by someone from WISPER who will tell you exactly where in/around the building your course takes place.
Good to know if you take a full-day course here: for the lunch break, you can bring your own lunch, eat in at Café Entrepot or buy something at the Lidl supermarket around the corner.
