Once created in the early 20th century, zines are more relevant today than ever. The homemade, independent fanzine — or simply ‘ zine ’ — has been a powerful medium decades, especially for artists, musicians, subcultures and litteraly anyone who wants to share their story or message. Zines are a platform for opinions, visions and entire artistic concepts, where the maker has full creative control over form and content.

In this lesson series we dive into the world of zines and discover how you can translate your ideas into this quirky medium. We explore the rich history and diverse styles of zines while experimenting with different materials and techniques from hand-drawn illustrations and text to collage, photography and printing.

What do you want to share with the world? How do you translate a message or story into the compact, direct form of a zine? Throughout the sessions you make your own zine, where we not only look at content, but also at the creative process, structure and design. Whether you want to shock, inform, inspire or just experiment — a zine gives you the freedom to make your voice heard.
