This day is dedicated entirely to characters. Not just characters: characters entirely based on ... food!
In Japan, this is an everyday phenomenon. In advertising, but also film and animation, food comes to life in the form of a real character. Try googling Gudetama, Anpanman of To-Fu Oyako to meet some of them!
Led by illustrator Ming Yue, who studied in Japan for many years, we dive into Asian visual culture. Based on our favourite foods, we design our own characters and explore what an expressive character needs. We experiment with shapes, expressions and colour to make our character come to life. Maybe we can even put some characters together and create a cartoon?
We work with all kinds of illustration techniques and materials. We draw inspiration from various Japanese examples and illustrators, as well as from our own shared dinner in the evening. For this, you can bring your own meal or order something at café Entrepot.
Check www.opek.be for more information about how to get here. At the first session, you will be welcomed by someone from WISPER who will tell you exactly where in/around the building your course takes place.
Good to know if you take a full-day course here: for the lunch break, you can bring your own lunch, eat in at Café Entrepot or buy something at the Lidl supermarket around the corner.
