In contact improvisation, as in any other partner dance or partner movement form, non verbal communication is very important and perception is vital. Perceiving your own body and dance, perceiving your partner’s body and structure, and perceiving where you are together. Perception is related to body awareness as well as to your senses. Through these sessions we want to spice up our ability to perceive ourselves, our moving body and each other, in order to gain more trust, flow and groundedness. We will work with games, principles and approaches inspired by movement methods like Ido Portal Movement Culture and Fighting Monkey, and let them meet Contact Improvisation to integrate them directly into partnerwork in motion. We will play, explore, dance, challenge each other, go blind and discover.
Contact improvisation (CI) has its roots in the early 1970s. It is a rich world, a playing field, a laboratory, a poetic universe. A basic physical principle is to play based on our movement instinct, opening our movement potential while sharing contact and weight with one or more partner(s).
No matter how small, subtle, soft or highly acrobatic the movements are, it is all about listening, being available and responding. Unlike other partner dances, we do not only remain vertical. We travel together through all levels of space, directions, upside down and all around, to and from the floor. Supporting and being supported, carrying and being carried. No fixed steps, but movement principles and deep active listening, being present. Before we know it, we are inhabiting our unique dance in that moment.
