Rita Castro is a Portuguese 2D animator and illustrator who has been living in the Ghent region for eight years. She began her Fine Arts studies in Portugal and later obtained a Master’s degree in Animated Film (cum laude) at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent, where she made two award-winning student films (her Bachelor’s and Master’s projects).
She has now been working full-time in the animated film industry for six years and is building up a diverse portfolio comprising self-published work (including fanzines, illustration prints and clay sculptures) and collaborations.
In addition, Rita is one of the leaders of Plica vzw, a community for zine and print makers in Ghent.
In Portugal, she draws on her experience as a lecturer in illustration and animation to mentor and support others. Her work stems from autobiographical, profound stories and intriguing imagery, often with a touch of magic and humour.
