Merel Denie

Merel Denie (Leiden, 1984) works as a theatre maker and teacher as well. After working as a movement teacher in Amsterdam for a couple of years, she followed her dream and started her studies in directing and drama teacher at the Theatre Academy Maastricht. She graduated in 2015. She writes, directs and plays. Her last performance ZAAD was premiered in CCBerchem in Belgium in June 2017. The year before she researched, with a series of three performances ‘in de waas van wie we zijn’ (de Warande), ‘Niet(s) Anders Omschrijven’ (Arenberg) and ‘Vlees’ (Culture Market Antwerp), the desire for the construction of our own identity and the destructive effects of the ego. In the same year she wrote and directed ‘Wat ik wil’, a performance for youth. It was selected for Landjuweel, just as her graduation project ‘Planeet Alles’, an adaptation of Esther Gerritsen's play. In 2017 she was nominated as a director and drama teacher for the Henriette Hustinx Price. The next eight and a half years, Merel will do artistic research at the Master Theatre in Maastricht next to her other projects. It is there that her diverse artistic language and her metaphysical questioning will be the basic foundation from which she will build her research.
