Ableton is not just another DAW or digital audio workstation, it is the favourite music creation tool of many artists, producers, DJs and beatmakers.

In this course, we will create electronic music in the broad sense of the word. Makers of all kinds of electronic genres are welcome.

We will delve into the creation process from A to Z and discuss plug-ins, (digital) synthesis, sequencers, and other tools. In this course, you will discover how to convert a loop into an arrangement, what makes your arrangement a real track, and when that track is then finished.

Recording acoustic instruments is not covered in the course itself, but you are of course free to add that to your production yourself.

We also delve deeper into associated technical skills. For instance, we will discuss how to make your sound/element fatter and thicker and how to blend your tracks together.

Spoiler alert: The answer does not simply lie in ‘compression’ and ‘EQ’.

Curious where it does lie then?

Welcome to this course!

Teachers Thomas and Reindert join forces for this hands-on course, after which you will go home with new, better tracks and the skills to make them at home later.

Participating with another DAW like Logic, Reaper... is possible, but keep in mind that you will have to make the translation yourself.

Practical

Bring your laptop and a version of Ableton (Intro/Standard/Suite) + headphones. Do you have an audio interface, midi controller or keyboard? Then feel free to bring those too (this is not a requirement).
An external mouse can also come in handy to work smoothly.

Level of experience

Level 2: You already have some experience gained in WISPER courses or elsewhere.

The specific prior knowledge expected for this course:

Basic Interface Navigation:
You know how to navigate through Ableton Live's interface, including the Arrangement and Session View, as well as how to access and use different panels, such as the Clip View, Device View and Mixer.

Audio and MIDI recording:
You will have experience with audio and MIDI recording, including how to create audio and MIDI tracks, arm tracks and record audio or MIDI data.

Managing Clips:
You are familiar with working with audio and MIDI clips, including creating, duplicating and arranging clips in both Session and Arrangement Views.

Basics of MIDI Programming:
You understand how to create and edit MIDI notes, use MIDI controllers and programme MIDI clips.

Basics of Audio Editing:
You are fluent in various audio editing techniques such as cutting, cropping and arranging audio clips. This also includes a basic understanding of time-stretching and warping.

Working with Effects:
You know how to add and manipulate audio and MIDI effects to tracks.

In doubt about your level? Then feel free to send an e-mail to reindert@wisper.be
