Astrid Vandendael's illustrations are recognizable by their tactile line and round, organic shapes. Her characters - often bulky and ignorant - try to understand their surroundings and others but do not always succeed. Astrid draws inspiration from her own experiences and everyday events, but views them in a melancholic and somewhat detached manner. When creating these illustrations, she invariably reverts with great pleasure to her favorite materials: pencil and colored pencil.
