During this day, we'll focus on portraits. We'll discover how portrait art can arise from the interaction between drawing, painting, printing, and textile processing. Together, we'll embark on a creative journey of discovery, bringing a portrait to life using various techniques. A portrait rich in layers, shapes, and meaning.
In the morning session, the emphasis will be on contours and line formation. Using a photo or the observation of fellow students, we'll create a portrait using various drawing and painting media. We'll experiment on all kinds of surfaces — paper, fabric, cardboard, wood, glass. Techniques such as blind drawing and spontaneous brushstrokes invite a freer approach to form and detail.
After painting on different canvases, we'll take the next step: we now work from the observation of our own self-portrait and paint directly onto mirror glass. The works are then transferred to paper and fabric as monoprints. In this way, a collection of portraits and portrait fragments grows, overlapping and entering into dialogue with each other.
In the afternoon session, the focus shifts to textile processing. We start with a large printed portrait or portrait fragments (on fabric or paper) and further process this with thread. By embroidering and sewing — in lines, patterns, and planes—the existing image is transformed and a new, layered portrait emerges in which graphic and textile elements merge.
WISPER Gent is situated at the Dok Noord site. Make sure to read the information on our Dok Noord page beforehand because this place can be a bit of a maze when you first come here.
