The term 'yielding' was coined by Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen (Body-Mind Centering) within the framework of her "developmentals", her observation of how young children learn to move. For Bonnie, 'yielding' is our first way of relating to gravity: the very first movement we learn is to give in to gravity, to make use of it in that way.
This giving-in, however, is not to be confused with collapsing, falling, or avoiding. Interestingly, “yielding” inherently contains its opposing movement vector: although we initially give in to gravity, we are not without strength. Rather, we yield so gradually and fluidly that, while moving with gravity, we simultaneously counteract it through the slowness and continuity of the movement. The flow of information remains present throughout the execution of the movement, making it readable for our partner(s), who can respond to it and engage with it creatively.
In this way, “yielding” is not only essential to contact improvisation, but in its multidimensionality also serves as an inspiration for “pushing,” “lifting,” “transporting,” and much more. In this workshop, we will explore how “yielding” can serve as an active source of movement inspiration.
WISPER has several course locations at the DOK Noord site. The Danspunt studio's are one of them. Is it your first time here? Please come in time and make sure to read the information on www.wisper.be/doknoord first. Without these guidelines, it's easy to get lost here!
