Special: HABITAT - sense your city, i.s.m. Dag van de Dans
A vibrant weekend, a laboratory. Starting from different approaches into movement, we will explore, experience, rediscover and inhabit our city and public space with sensory curiosity.
Leading questions are: how is our daily life influencing the way in which we are in a place and in which way do we see ourselves in this place? How can we inhabit and re-inhabit public areas?
This weekend aims for experiencing and perceiving the environment of the city through the senses of the body, in order to reinvent our understanding of and our presence in that city. We will move and be present, individually and as a group, through the landscape of the city. We will reflect on the meaning and rules of public space, being aware of commercial, social and political frames. We will be invited into situations of interaction and exchange between the body, the group and the city.
The laboratory starts from different approaches to movement. Elements and inspiration are (amongst others) taken from the theory of La Deriva proposed by Guy Debord, the reflections of David Le Breton and Lisa Nelson’s Tuning Score´s. We will use tools as mapping and recording voice to describe and to observe the relation of the inner space towards the exterior and public space.
About the teacher:
Carolina Van Eps Jimenez is a Colombian dancer, performer, artist and researcher. She has been living in Brussels and Ghent for many years and is artistically involved in social and political actions, sourcing from the Colombian context she grew up in.
“This laboratory is part of the research and of the accumulation of different artistic experiences and practices in which I have been searching for distinct forms of relation, creation, intervention and irruption in the open spaces of cities. Experiences and creations in which I have always confronted myself with how to re-invent the spaces in public areas, how to live them and explore them from a distinct dimension.
How can I be present, physically, more like an explorer rather than a consumer? In these proposals I have confronted different difficulties, such as sensory impoverishment to enjoy the spaces. The condition of the body as a productive and working body, and the disappearance of pleasure through the discovery of territory.”
